Mallika Sherawat, who was promoting her upcoming film Dirty Politics at the Cannes Film Festival this year, has landed in a muddy puddle in social media.
Her recent interview, which many heard as — ‘innerview’ — with ‘Variety’ had the actress drawling out a thick apparently American accent.
Mallika, who played a naked snake woman in Hisss, said about her new film,”It’s about a woman who gets involved with a politician, who was a nurse (sic),” she said as she kept shuffling between ‘hurr’ American and Indian accent,”And how she gets murrderred in the end… here was this woman who actually had the ‘currrage’ to stand up to this politician who kind of raped her, molested her, abused her and record his misgivings and everything (sic),and release it to the press.”
However, the lead actress of the film seems to have gotten her facts wrong. Director K C Biokadia has recently clarified that the film is not about a murdered nurse. Its inspired by the real-life case of Bhanwari Devi,a midwife who went missing in 2011 and the remnants of whose corpse were eventually found in early 2012. Allegedly, she got involved with a politician and threatened to release to the press a CD of the two of them if he didnt pay her. Soon after, she disappeared. Her husband then accused the politician of the rape and murder of Bhanwari Devi.
Does Mallika not feel comfortable in her own shoes and hence needs to be somebody else altogether? And,therefore, the accent?
Mallika claimed she was the first Indian actress to wear a bikini onscreen. For the record, the first Indian actress to wear a bikini was Sharmila Tagore for the cover of a magazine soon after her film An Evening in Paris released in 1967.
Mallika also states she was the first Indian actress to kiss onscreen. But does that go to Devika Rani way back in 1933 for four-long minutes in the film Karma?
The actress said: “I was fortunate enough to do an American movie called Politics of Love which,we found out,has an IMDb rating of 2.6.
The actress is facing a lot of flak back home for her comments calling India ‘regressive and depressing’. Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra has retorted openly,”It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Mini Mathur tweeted,”How is Mallika Sherawat being allowed to be so STUPID? UGH.” Poonam Pandey also tweeted against the actress saying,”Malika went to #Cannes and got carried away with the media attention. She’s not used to it na…”
