Madhuri Dixit left her flourishing career back in India when she married Dr Shriram Nene in 1999, but less than a decade later, she was in Mumbai making her comeback with a YRF film. While for the first few years, Madhuri was the housewife who took care of her husband and in-laws, she soon found support from her new family as they encouraged her movie career. In a recent interview, Madhuri spoke about this and said that since she got married in a family that understood the value of hard work and individuality, they extended their support to her in whichever way they could.
In a chat with Ranveer Allahbadia, Madhuri shared, “When you get married, you become a part of a unit and whatever you do, that unit will always be a part of it. So unless you have support from your unit, you can’t move forward. Their support is extremely essential if you want to do something with your life. So I always say that I am very lucky that when I got married, I got enough support from my in-laws.”
Madhuri shared that her mother-in-law, who is more than 80 years old, continues to work in real estate in the US, and her father-in-law recently retired at 83. “I got married in a family where everyone is working and they understand that it is very important for a woman to have her identity,” she said and added, “They know that I will handle the house but it is very important that I, as an individual, am doing something and I’m happy with that. I, as an individual, I am working for my unit as well because you are also contributing to your own unit.”

In the same chat, Madhuri also spoke about raising her sons, Arin and Ryan, and said that one needs to trust their kids with the values they have imparted in them. She was talking about the ‘empty nest’ phase when kids leave their house for college, and parents are left behind worrying for their children. “It’s tricky for the kids also, and it’s tricky for the parents also,” she said.
Madhuri added that kids are sometimes quite preoccupied with their life and start relying on teh friends who are around them, whilst parents worry if they are in the right company. She said that this is the time when parents must learn to trust their children. “Whatever you have taught your children, like I have taught them good values, respect, doing the right thing in any situation. You try and teach them everything, so trust them that once they are there, they will use the lessons you have taught them. Trust them a little. There might be some minor mistakes but that’s because they are also discovering life for the first time on their own. There might be a few wrong decisions, but you should support them regardless. Make sure they go through those tough times and come back, and find stability in their lives,” she said.
