It has been almost two years since acting talent Konkona Sen Sharma has had a new Bollywood release. Known to tackle films that tend to deviate from the commercial Bollywood potboilers, Konkona is now gearing up for the release of Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Talvar’. Based on the sensational 2008 Aarushi Talwar murder case, the National Award-winning actress will portray the role of Nupur Talwar in the film.
In conversation with The Indian Express, Konkona Sen Sharma shares why she chose to be a part of the controversial film. Here are excerpts from the interview:
Q: What drew you to be a part of ‘Talvar’?
Konkona: I was instantly intrigued when I read the script. We have done ‘Talvar’ in three different parts, recreating three different scenarios. And so, it was very interesting for me as a performer to be a part of this film.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about your character in film – you play a mother accused of killing her daughter? Did you meet any family members so as to get an insight into role preparation?
Konkona: Yes, but there is definitely more to the film than that. But, no I did not meet any family. I did not feel the need to because the script was enough for me.
Q: Since you play a real life character, did you feel any kind of responsibility to the role you portray?
Konkona: I think the responsibility falls majorly on the part of the direct or. On my part, I essayed the role the way I understood it. I basically followed the script, which was very thorough.
Q: Do you think making films on cases still under investigation make for good cinema?
Konkona: Yes, I think it can but it depends on how the film is made. The Aarushi Talwar murder was such a controversial case and a lot of information is already available to the people. We are not showing anything new in the film. But, I was very confident right from the start that Meghna Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj would deliver a quality product.
Q: The Aarushi Talwar murder case has been under a lot of scrutiny and criticism owing to the verdict. Do you have any personal thoughts about the case?
Konkona: In the film, it is not conclusively proven that the parents murdered Aarushi. Even I do not know who has done it. Over time, the evidence has been so botched up, that nobody really knows the complete truth.
Q: Tell us about your experience working with Meghna Gulzar and collaborating with Vishal Bhardwaj once again.
Konkona: It is always great to work with Vishal Bhardwaj and his team as they regularly come up with such good work. I am always happy to be a part of his projects even if he is not directing. This is the first time that I worked with Meghna Gulzar and I must say that it was a really comfortable experience. She is very dignified as a person and seems to draw from an inner strength. At times, it was confusing for me since the case has so many facts to keep track of, but, Meghna would come on the sets and put everything in place.
Directed by Meghna Gulzar and co-produced by Vishal Bhardwaj, ‘Talvar’ also stars Irrfan Khan, Neeraj Kabi and Tabu among others. The film hits cinemas on october 2, 2015.
