He wanted to be neither a politician this evening nor a lawyer, only Kabil Sibal the lyricist. The former Union minister has penned five songs for Zainaab, a film on a fictional love story that unfolds in the foreground of the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013.
The film was launched at the The Imperial hotel in Delhi on Saturday, with Jagdish Tytler and Sandeep Dixit among the audience. Ahmed Patel put in an early but brief appearance. “I expect the film will be controversial,” Sibal said as he worked the crowd before the proceedings.
Sibal has given the political theme an added edge by adding a poem, recited in a voice-over, which begins with “Khuda ke bande, sambhal ja/ab bhi waqt hai, badal ja.” It is a message to the present government, Sibal said. He added that he had in mind only the sufferings of the victims of the riots while writing.
