Scenes of mass hysteria were witnessed at movie theatres across the country as Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan hit the big screens on Thursday, September 7. While SRK has always had a stronghold in the north of India, this is the first time that he is attempting to reach out to South Indian audiences. Jawan is directed by Atlee, and also stars Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi, who are all best known for their work in the Tamil-language film industry.

Videos of SRK’s fans outside theatres in the early hours of Thursday morning began doing the rounds online, they were followed by visuals from inside cinema halls that showed audiences dancing on their seats and in front of the screen. Scenes like this are common at screenings of South superstars such as Rajinikanth and Vijay, but they’re less frequent at screenings of films starring Hindi-speaking heroes. But a similar kind of interest was also seen at first day screenings of SRK’s last release, Pathaan.

Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan was Shah Rukh’s first film after a five-year sabbatical, and Jawan is being seen as a second dose of the excitement that he delivered just some months ago. Jawan actually sold more tickets prior to release than even Pathaan, which holds the record for the biggest opening for a Hindi-language movie ever. Jawan is expected to overtake Pathaan’s record on opening day, with a projected Rs 65 crore to Rs 70 crore debut.

One video showed crowds dancing to the song “Zinda Banda,” while another video showed them dancing in front of the screen. Another video showed a fan tearing up outside a Bengaluru screen, and being comforted by his friends. Some fans also showed up with bandages on their heads, mimicking one of the many looks that SRK dons in the movie. In Mumbai, hordes of Shah Rukh fans marched to the Gaiety Galaxy single screen holding banners of SRK. They also performed a mini Ganesh Chaturthi Dahi Handi ritual outside the theatre. Shah Rukh thanked his fans for the gesture, and wrote in a tweet that he hadn’t slept all night just to watch these reactions come in.

One person came to Mumbai just to be able to watch the film in the IMAX format, while a doctor couple said that their son urged them to watch an 8 am show before heading to work. In Kolkata, fans erected a shrine for Shah Rukh inside a theatre.

Shah Rukh will return to the big screens later this year with Dunki, a comedy drama directed by Rajkumar Hirani. He hasn’t announced any follow-up projects yet, but considering both Atlee and Hirani’s track record, he’s in for two more blockbusters.
