Hansal Mehta quotes ‘granthas’ as he describes relationship with Safeena Hussain, reveals he performed ex-wife’s last rites

The filmmaker has two sons with first wife Sunita — Jai, who made his directorial debut recently with Lootere–and Pallava. After divorcing Sunita, he dated Safeena, actor Yusuf Hussain’s daughter, with whom he has two daughters—Kimaya and Rehana. After dating for 17 years, Hansal and Safeena tied the knot in 2022.

On being asked how their children coped with the situation, Hansal revealed that even after years of being separated, he carried out Sunita’s last rites as ‘husband’. He said, “My parents not only looked after me and my children, they looked after Sunita too. Sunita’s relationship with me never ended on a bitter note. We did get separated but I did her last rites as her husband.”

Hansal also opened up on Sunita and Safeena’s equation and shared that the two were like friends, and Sunita even taught Safeena how to drape a saree. He said, “When she was alive, we used to talk. She had health issues, when she would be worried about things, she would talk to me. We never turned our relationship into enmity. Sunita and Safeena used to talk to each other a lot too. We were once at Sanjay Gupta’s house in Pune for Diwali, for that Sunita helped Safeena drape her saree. Safeena never considered Jai and Pallava any less than her children. Jai calls Safeena his mother.”
