Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 continues to roar at the box office. The sequel of the 2001 war drama has been unstoppable at the box office. After a slight dip over the week, Gadar 2 saw a big spike on Saturday as it minted Rs 13.75 crores, taking the 16-day collection to Rs 439.95 crores. The Anil Sharma directorial has now crossed KGF 2 Hindi’s collection (Rs 435 crore) to become the third-highest film (Hindi language).
Sharing the latest box office figures, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote on Twitter, “CROSSES ‘KGF 2’, NEXT ‘BAAHUBALI 2’… After crossing *lifetime biz* of #Dangal, #Gadar2 overtakes #KGF2 #Hindi… #Gadar2 is now THIRD HIGHEST GROSSING #Hindi film in #India… Continues to smash #BO records at mass sectors… [Week 3] Fri 7.10 cr, Sat 13.75 cr. Total: ₹ 439.95 cr. #India biz.”
The Sunny Deol-Ameesha Patel film is now behind only Pathaan (Rs 543 crores net) and Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion (Rs 511 crores net). Gadar 2 is likely to cross Rs 500 crore in its fourth week, however, it’s unlikely that it will surpass its two predecessors. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan is set to release on September 7, which could become its biggest hindrance.
In a recent interview, director Anil Sharma opened up about how he, along with the film’s star Sunny Deol, never paid heed to the box office hype. He said that they wanted to “make a space in people’s hearts” with Gadar 2, and they have successfully managed to do that.
Asked how he looks at his film possibly overtaking Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, Anil Sharma told India.com, “I don’t believe in numbers, Pathaan has done exceptionally well, even KGF (Chapter 2) did extremely well, and now, Gadar 2 is performing as well. Now, let’s see how far it goes, how far the public takes it. It is the public’s film. We have already crossed Rs 400 crore, it will reach Rs 500 crore mark in the coming week and maybe the Rs 1,000 crore mark at some point. So, we are not looking at numbers alone, we are trying to make a place in people’s hearts. People are watching it and loving it, that’s enough for us. Whatever (box office) numbers have come out today are real, there is nothing fake.”
Coming back to the film’s collection, Gadar 2 earned Rs 284.63 crore and Rs 134.47 crore in week 1 and 2, respectively. Even after that, it continued to have more than 40 percent occupancy in the Hindi market as the third weekend rolled in. The night shows remained the most crowded followed by evening, afternoon, and morning.
Gadar 2 was released on August 11, alongside Akshay Kumar-starrer OMG 2. The film made Rs 40 crore on opening day, but peaked on Independence Day, when it made Rs 55 crore. It also stars Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, Manish Wadhwa, and Gaurav Chopra.
While fans could not stop heaping praises on the movie, it also received fairly positive reviews from critics
