Farah Khan says she earns more, husband Shirish Kunder doesn’t but they are equals: ‘He bears the brunt of…’

Farah Khan revealed in a 2016 interview that she and her husband Shirish Kunder decided not to work with each other since the crew would seek validation from Farah, a more successful filmmaker than him, even on his film sets.

Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder have been married since 2004.Farah Khan and Shirish Kunder have been married since 2004.

Farah Khan tied the knot with her boyfriend and professional collaborator Shirish Kunder back in 2004. But right after their wedding, Farah, who was already an ace choreographer, turned into one of the most sought-after directors with the blockbuster success of her directorial debut Main Hoon Na, starring Shah Rukh Khan. She followed it up with a bigger commercial success in Om Shanti Om (2007), also starring Shah Rukh.

Shirish, who was an editor on her films, however, failed to recreate the same success with his directorial ventures, whether it’s his debut Jaan-E-Mann (2006) and Joker (2012). “We’ve survived 12 years of extreme failures and extreme successes. So, I give him a lot of credit because he has to bear the brunt of being married to me,” said Farah in a 2016 interview.

“That Abhimaan factor never comes in,” she added, referring to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1973 seminal romance Abhimaan, in which Amitabh Bachchan’s character gets envious of his wife, Jaya Bachchan’s character, after the latter becomes a more popular singer than him. “These feminists talk a lot. But we truly are equals. I never feel, ‘Oh, I’m earning more, but my husband is not.’ No! Why? We’re equal partners,” Farah added in the Zee Cafe interview.

Farah revealed she and Shirish are “very happy now,” but the Abhimaan factor used to come in their early days of marriage. “When I used to choreograph his songs, people used to automatically look at me after the shot got over. It’s very demeaning to a director. So, we resolved that and decided to not work with each other. You do your own thing,” added Farah.

She also pointed out that while she’s an extrovert, Shirish is completely opposite. “He’s very reticent and a loner, I’d say. He’d talk to a very few people,” Farah said. She argued that she also has to bear the brunt of being more out there, since she’s often slammed for the professional failures of both Shirish and her brother, filmmaker Sajid Khan.

“I’m judged for a Himmatwala (2013, film directed by Sajid). But I didn’t make that movie. ‘Give Joker’s money back!’ I didn’t make that. You can ask that for Tees Maar Khan (2010), I made that. Also, I’m very protective about them. I’ve been very protective of Sajid since childhood. I’m very protective of Shirish. But you have to detach. If you understand people here, it’s a matter of time. If a movie Shirish makes does well, things will change. It’s a very success-driven industry,” added Farah.

Things haven’t changed much for Shirish since 2016 as his latest directorial, Mrs. Serial Killer, starring Jacqueline Fernandez, got panned very widely upon its release on Netflix India in 2020. Meanwhile, Sajid Khan was dropped as the director of the hit 2019 comedy Housefull 4 after being accused of sexual misconduct during the Me Too movement in 2018.
