Veteran actor Dilip Kumar was admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday after he complained of swelling in his right leg and had a fever. The actor, who will be celebrating his 94th birthday on December 11, was taken to hospital by wife Saira Banu.

Talking to Bombay Times, Saira said, “I was anyway planning to take him for a routine check-up, but the swelling alarmed me. He was also complaining of cold and cough. I don’t ignore anything even remotely suspicious when it comes to Dilip saab’s health.”

She added that the legendary actor is under observation and is said to be stable. “The doctors are examining him; he’s under observation. He’s very comfortable with the team here. I just hope there is nothing serious. Inshallah, I will take him home before his birthday on Sunday,” the actor said.

The actor was hospitalised earlier this year after he suffered from high fever. Known as the tragedy king of Bollywood, Dilip — born Yusuf Khan — is known for his films such as Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Ganga Jamuna, Naya Daur and Madhumati among others. Dilip Kumar’s last film was Qila in 1998. He was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.

The veteran actor’s birthdays are big celebrations with Bollywood celebs — led by self-confessed fans such as Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan lining up to congratulate him.
