Dibakar Banerjee says ‘collective madness infected us in last 6-7 years’, opens up about blurring out nudity in LSD 2: ‘We’re all losing our minds’

When Dibakar saw how the CBFC has changed in the last decade, Dibakar said that he doesn’t remember much of his interactions with the certification body. About his most recent interactions, he said that he was told to remove certain swear words directed at mothers and sisters, and asked if they could be changed to target fathers. After thinking about it, the CBFC said that he should probably avoid family members altogether.

Dibakar continued, “They didn’t touch anything else in the film. The instance of nudity they can’t do anything about, because the Cinematograph Act forbids frontal nudity. We can’t show breasts, we can’t show breastfeeding, we can’t show genitalia, by law. The censor board can’t do anything about it. There’s a long process to get special exemption in certain cases, but we don’t even  have the Tribunal anymore. It’s the CBFC and then the Supreme Court. So, they know it’s an adult film. They passed it relatively unscathed, only certain swear words have been removed. The nudity we’ve blurred.”

LSD 2 is a follow-up to Dibakar’s path-breaking original LSD – Love Sex Aur Dhoka, which was released in 2010. Dibakar’s last feature film was Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. He directed a feature film titled Tees for Netflix in the interim, but the movie was removed from the streamer’s release schedule.
