Dhurandhar: Mohit Sharma’s brother wants makers to admit if film is based on him, says they’re ‘not looking for any benefit’
Claiming that the film appears to be directly inspired by the life of late Major Mohit Sharma, his family sought a stay on Dhurandhar's release.

Even though its release date is right around the corner, director Aditya Dhar’s Ranveer Singh-starrer Dhurandhar is yet to receive a green signal from all quarters, ensuring its peaceful debut, as controversies continue to rock the spy actioner. After Dhurandhar sparked controversy following the release of its trailer for its extremely graphic depiction of violence and lead star Ranveer Singh faced criticism for his recent impression of the daiva from Kantara 2, which many felt was disrespectful, the film again made headlines when the parents of Army officer Major Mohit Sharma moved the court against the spy actioner.
Claiming that the film appears to be directly inspired by the life of Major Mohit Sharma, who was killed in the line of duty in 2009 while conducting operations targeting terrorist groups in Jammu and Kashmir, his family sought a stay on Dhurandhar’s release, pointing out that it was created without taking consent from them or the Army. Now, the Ashoka Chakra awardee’s brother, Madhur Sharma, has spoken out on the matter.

During a recent interview, he stated that his family was seeking nothing but due credit for the martyred Army officer if the movie is, in fact, inspired by his life. “Ever since the film was announced, there has been a lot of information on social media suggesting it is based on my brother. Reputed media channels and influencers with millions of followers have drawn correlations. We just want the producers to clarify and tell us the reality. There is no benefit that the parents are looking for. We want people to take a sympathetic, empathetic perspective. This is not just for us, but for every family that has lost a son (in military operations). We just want due diligence. If the film is based on him, just say, ‘Sorry, ma’am, we didn’t inform you.’ If not, say the hype is untrue,” he told Hindustan Times.
Pointing out that the family had extended support when a film based on Mohit Sharma’s life was announced in 2021, Madhur stated that they would be proud if his life inspired a movie, as “he has left a legacy, and it should live on.” Following the release of Dhurandhar’s trailer, Madhur had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to ask Aditya Dhar whether the character played by Ranveer was based on Mohit. In response, the director wrote, “Our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of braveheart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.”

When asked why the family moved a petition in the Delhi High Court despite director Aditya Dhar’s clarification, Madhur pointed out that it arrived two days after his post and stated that the plea had already been filed by then. The court, however, disposed of it on Monday while directing the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to consider the objections raised by Mohit’s parents. While the CBFC informed the HC that the movie’s makers have given a declaration that it is not a biopic, the counsel appearing for the Indian Army maintained that the force also has no objection to the release of the film.
Dhurandhar is scheduled to hit the screens on Friday, December 5. Also starring Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and Sara Arjun in key roles, Dhurandhar is produced jointly by Jyoti Deshpande and Lokesh Dhar. It features cinematography by Vikash Nowlakha, editing by Shivkumar V Panicker, and music by Shashwat Sachdev.
