Filmmaker Anil Sharma, who has had a long association with the Deol family, recently spoke about Dharmendra’s last days. The filmmaker shared that after getting discharged from the hospital, Dharmendra was showing signs of recovery, and everyone, including the doctors, was hopeful he would pull through.
Speaking to Vickey Lalwani about visiting Dharmendra at his home after the veteran actor got discharged, Anil said, “I went to his home. He had recovered. He would open his eyes and he would even move his hands. He was recovering and doctors were saying that Dharamji bahut strong aadmi hai (Dharamji is a very strong man).”
He added, “Doctors also assured that he would recover and even in the hospital, it looked like he would recover. But the age shows its signs, and you can’t do anything in front of age. Everyone was hopeful that he would recover and that we would celebrate his birthday on December 8. Everyone was preparing.” Dharmendra would have turned 90 on December 8.

Anil Sharma first directed Dharmendra in the 1987 film Hukumat. They then worked together on films like Elaan-E-Jung, Farishtay, and Tahalka — all starring Dharmendra. Sharma was also the director behind Dharmendra’s elder son Sunny Deol’s iconic film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. He went on to direct Sunny in several films, including The Hero: Love Story of a Spy, Singh Saab the Great, and Gadar 2. He helmed Bobby Deol’s film Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo in 2004 and directed all three Deols — Dharmendra, Sunny, and Bobby — in the 2007 family drama Apne.
Recently, Mumtaz also spoke about visiting Dharmendra in the hospital. However, the veteran star shared that she wasn’t allowed to meet the actor as he was on a ventilator at that time. She told E Times, “I went to see him at the hospital, but the staff told me he was on the ventilator and no one was allowed to meet him. I sat there for 30 minutes hoping I might still get to see him… but I couldn’t. I left without meeting him,” she recalled.
