The release of the juvenile offender in the December 16 Delhi gangrape case has sparked off a massive debate in the country with many voices calling for him to be tried as an adult. Joining the debate, Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra said the it was ‘too heinous a crime to be forgiven’.
When asked what she felt about the release of the juvenile offender, Priyanka told The Indian Express.com, “I have always said that I don’t agree with it. It’s a heinous crime. It is unforgivable. I am a law abiding citizen that’s why I will go with whatever the law decides but it was too heinous a crime to be forgiven.” (Read: Priyanka Chopra on Miss Universe goof up: I wouldn’t have known how to react)

Joining the discussion, director Prakash Jha said, “The law considers him to be juvenile. It is so unfortunate that it has become a case of child v/s women. We know and we do understand the issue of reform and juvenile justice and at the same time the degree of this heinous crime is what wavers. In general, trying to say that reducing the age of juvenile to 16 wouldn’t in anyway that 15 year old won’t commit crimes. The solution is not child v/s women. This is a much bigger debate and it is major education which is needed.”
The Supreme Court on Monday had refused to stay the release of the juvenile convicted, noting that his further detention needs a “legislative sanction” while the court has to “go by the law as it stands today”.
