Nothing smells like the sweet smell of success, and Boman Irani, after having spent few years in the Indian Film Industry, can certainly boast off about his short journey of success.

Having delivered strong performances in movies like ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, ‘3 Idiots’, and ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ among others, the actor has come a long way. With success comes a bevy of endorsements, and Boman Irani quite relates to the kind of advertisements he does; ‘the common man’ as we say. One such product is AmbiPur fragrances.

In an exclusive conversation with Indian, Boman Irani tell tales about how he landed up the deal.

Boman Irani says, “When I got the offer to endorse this product and I told my wife about this, she said it’s the same brand we use. So yeah, I relate to this product and I totally believe in it.”

Since the beginning of his career, Boman Irani has been assigned roles that are closer to real life, be it J. Asthana of ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, or Virus of ‘3 Idiots’. So, is choosing such kind of roles easy for an actor? Did he always want to be an actor?

“I have seldom planned things. I started as a photographer, which I started as a hobby. Then I began doing theatre. Acting also just happened with ‘Darna Mana Hai’ and ‘Munnabhai’,” says Boman Irani.

Boman Irani further adds that all the roles he has done till now are close to him, with that of Mr Khurana in ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ being very special.

“Every role I have done is really close to me. They are slice-of-life roles. J. Asthana is special because it was my first commercial success. However, Mr Khurana from ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ is very special. It was widely appreciated.”

Boman Irani has been a part of multi-starrer ensembles lately and has been able to hold his own in these movies, including last year’s ‘Happy New Year’. Ask him about his strong friendship with Farah Khan, he says he is very fond of her.

“I have known Farah for many years now. Years back, we were shooting for a project together. She was the choreographer and I was the photographer. And she kept on asking me if I knew some good Parsi actors.
She didn’t know I was also doing theatres then. But I gave her a list of actors. She auditioned them, but didn’t like them. So, she called me again and asked for more names. Later when she came to know that I was an actor too, she said, ‘Why didn’t you tell me earlier?'”

Boman Irani adds, “We ended up doing ‘Main Hoon Na’ and since then our friendship has only grown. It was wonderful working with her in ‘Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Pad Gayi’.

The way Farah handles everything is commendable – her family, children and film projects. I think every woman should be proud of her.”

Quiz him about his role in Rohit Shetty’s upcoming ‘Dilwale’, he says, “Working with Rohit Shetty is so much fun. Everybody knows how fun and exciting it is on Rohit Shetty’s movie sets. Shah Rukh Khan hasn’t joined the cast till now, but shooting with Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan was good. Besides, I got a chance to work with the legendary Johnny Lever. He is such a lovely person. It was an experience of a lifetime working with him.”

And has he got any favourites among the younger generation of stars?

“Not really. Everybody is great and doing such great work. I am working with Varun (Dhawan) in ‘Dilwale’ and I love what’s he doing. He is my son Kayoze’s friend too. They have worked together in ‘Student Of The Year’. Sidharth (Malhotra) too. I like Alia (Bhatt) too. She is so talented and is my son’s friend,” says the young-at-heart Boman Irani.
