Actor-director Ajay Devgn‘s latest film, Bholaa, is holding fairly well at the box office. On its seventh day of release, the film is estimated to have made Rs 3.3 crore. Bholaa, a remake of the Tamil hit Kaithi, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has so far netted Rs 56.8 crore in India. The film’s global gross stands at Rs 72 crore.

Bholaa opened to a modest Rs 11.2 crore on Thursday, which happened to be a holiday. Over the extended weekend, it ended up making more than Rs 40 crore nett. It showed an upward trend during the weekend, appeared to pass the all-important Monday test as well, with Rs 4.5 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama. Industry tracker Sacnilk predicted a 31% decrease in collections as compared to Wednesday, and reported that Bholaa had a 6.5% occupancy on its sixth day of release.

Bholaa is Ajay’s fourth film as director, after U Me Aur Hum, Shivaay, and Runway 34. None of those films managed to do well at the box office. And even though Bholaa is showing a strong hold at the BO, it is still not pulling crowds like Ajay’s last film, Drishyam 2, which made more than Rs 340 crore worldwide. Bholaa will, however, have a clear path until Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan arrives on April 21.

In fact, Ajay’s output during the pandemic has been hit or miss. His first major release, Bhuj: The Pride of India went straight to Disney+ Hotstar, and both Runway 34 and Thank God tanked. Drishyam 2 was the only bright spot; the film emerged as one of the few Bollywood hits of last year, and defied expectations at the box office. He also made his series debut with Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, a remake of the hit British series Luther, and appeared in an extended cameo in the Oscar-winning Telugu film RRR.

Next up, Ajay will star in the long-delayed sports drama Maidaan, and then, he will return to his biggest cash cow, the Singham franchise.
