In a recent interview, when speaking about his childhood, Ayushmann said that he was an underconfident child and it was his father who helped him overcome that. When asked if his father beat him up when he was a kid, Ayushmann laughed and said that this was seen as the “normal thing” in those days.
Talking to Galatta Plus, Ayushmann said, “I was underconfident as a kid, my father helped me with that, maybe.” When asked about being beaten up by his father, he said, “Those were different times. That was like the normal thing at that time. Now we millennials have realised that…” Ayushmann was asked if his underconfident nature was a result of that behaviour, he said, “I don’t know but I became a people pleaser, maybe because of that. I can’t say no but one thing that I have to give it to my father is, that he invested in me. There was a lot of investment from his side as a father.”
Ayushmann then proceeded to praise his late father and shared that he always pushed him to perform, and his investment was quite wholesome. “To hone my talent, my skill, to make me confident… I had stage fright. In my first play, I had no lines so from everything, he used to always tell me to perform. On every birthday party, school annual function, so I was the one who was dancing, acting, singing and doing everything as a triple threat. So it was him who was forcing me to just go on stage and do it. He is the reason I am here,” he said.
In an earlier chat with Honestly Saying Podcast, Ayushmann called his father a “dictator” and said, “I’m a completely different father. Mine was a dictator. Getting beaten with chappals, belts, etc… were par for the course, and of course, there was childhood trauma.”
Ayushmann’s brother Aparshakti previously shared an incident where their father beat him up with a cricket bat because he disrespected his cricket coach. He shared on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, “You will not believe that for one kilometre, from the academy to our house, he hit me with a bat. And that day, he said something.”
Ayushmann and Aparshakti’s father, who was an astrologer named P Khurana, passed away in 2023.
