For those who have long waited to watch the brilliant and beautiful Sonakshi Sinha to do something meritorious, Akira was the answer. Directed by A R Murugadoss, the actioner has Sonakshi Sinha as the protagonist but the film failed to get the expected result at the box office on day one, Friday. Akira minted Rs. 5.15 crore at the box office on the opening day.
Morning shows saw 15-20 percent occupancy, which was similar to what Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Sarbjit also saw on its opening day. Despite the stellar cast of Sonakshi, Anurag Kashyap and Konkona Sensharma, the audience stayed away from theatres.
However, with mostly good reviews coming in for Sonakshi and Anurag, Akira may well pick up in the coming days. The fact that Friday was Bharat bandh may also have affected the viewership.
Essaying the titular role in this college-centric drama, Sonakshi is looking to break new grounds by shouldering her first ever woman-centric film. Directed by Tamil sensation Murugadoss, Akira is the remake of Tamil film Mouna Guru.
The USP of the film is Sonakshi. The actress has trained hard to showcase the role of a strong woman in the film. One will get to see her kicking some rears and indulging in some real action till now a bastion of the actors she has romanced on screen. While there are no big names opposite Sonakshi, the other surprise package is Anurag Kashyap as the grey character. The acclaimed director dons an actor’s hat and it remains to be seen how much impact he can create in his new avatar.
The movie is the only big release at the box-office. There are a couple of other Hindi releases lined up but nothing major that can perhaps upset Sonakshi’s star power.
#Akira gathered momentum after an ordinary start… Biz picked up from evening onwards… Fri ₹ 5.15 cr. India biz.

The movie has got good screen numbers in screens across the country and given that there is no stiff competition from others and with no previous week’s releases going strong, Sonakshi should make an impressive outing at the weekend box office.
