Being labeled as one of the most beautiful women in the world surely comes with its fair share of favourable moments as well as the not-so-pleasurable factors. You are constantly under public scrutiny especially with regard to your work, lifestyle and of course your style quotient. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been at the receiving end of both – praise as well as intense critical judgment when it comes to her fashion choices – both on the red carpet as well as off it.
But, it was Aishwarya Rai’s Cannes appearances for the last 14 years that had both the media as well as critics on the edge. They tore her to pieces when she got it ‘unforgivably’ wrong, but ‘ooed’ and ‘aahed’ when the beauty turned to an enchanting Goddess on the red carpet.
Who can ever forget the harsh criticism that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan faced – with dignified silence – about her post-pregnancy weight at the French Riviera.
Quite a few write-ups mentioned her ‘double chin’, calling her weight gain extremely ‘shocking’, with no regard for the actress who was immersed in the new joys of motherhood. Some even compared her to the likes of former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham.
And yet again, two years later, Aishwarya was the talk of the town as she posed in a dazzling gold strapless mermaid-cut gown by Roberto Cavalli at the Cannes 2014.
What seems to be an interesting observation is that no doubt over the past few years, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has definitely upped her fashion game on the international level, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for her appearances back home. While her red carpet appearances on the international stage boast of designers like Ellie Saab, Ralph & Russo and the likes of Roberto Cavalli, her public appearances here lack vivacity and sparkle.
When in the country, be it for festival gatherings with the family, high-profile wedding appearances or promotions for her forthcoming release, ‘Jazbaa’, Aishwarya seems to not only lack interest in putting any effort into her outfit choices, but also prefers to play it play it a bit drab, for lack of a better word.
At the recent launch of the ‘Jazbaa’ song, ‘Bandeyaa’, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who plays an advocate in the film, attended the event in a navy blue Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna blouse with black skinny jeans. While we can’t fault the clothes, it was the enviable pair of gorgeous teal coloured Jimmy Choo heels that were so out of place in the whole look. They surely deserved a better outing, which allowed them to be the star attraction.
For the trailer launch of ‘Jazbaa’, Aishwarya’s look was devoid of colour and as much as we love ‘black’, ‘white’ and the two together, we felt the beauty could have definitely done better than the blazer on tights.
This look was followed by a black and gold Sabyasachi creation that she wore to the sets of ‘Dance India Dance’. However, the outfit made Aishwarya look like she stepped straight out of a ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ set. But, there did seem to be some effort in her appearance, so we can forgive this one. However, we do wish the actress would experiment a bit atleast when it comes to her hair and makeup.
