Star kid launches fashion label after struggling in Bollywood; sells kaftan for Rs 25,000, couture gown for nearly Rs 4 lakh

The star kid first debuted in Bollywood about 17 years ago. However, he couldn't replicate the success of his father.

Shekhar SumanStar Kid debuted in Bollywood in 2008

Actor Shekhar Suman entered Bollywood decades ago, making his debut opposite the legendary Rekha in the film Utsav. The movie was produced by Shashi Kapoor and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Girish Karnad. Over the years, Shekhar established himself in the industry, transitioned to television, and went on to judge several reality shows. Today, he owns a European-style home in one of Mumbai’s most upscale neighbourhoods.

However, his son Adhyayan Suman couldn’t replicate the same success. After a lukewarm Bollywood career, he has now stepped into the fashion industry with his own label, Duchess Kumari.

Adhyayan, who made his acting debut in 2008 with Haal-e-Dil, has appeared in only 12 films and four web series over 17 years. His limited success eventually pushed him to explore entrepreneurship, leading to the launch of his fashion brand in March this year.

Since its debut, Duchess Kumari has already styled celebrities such as Twinkle Khanna, Kajol, and Anushka Sen — the latter even wore one of the brand’s creations for her Cannes red carpet debut.

The latest celebrity to discover the label is filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan, who visited Shekhar Suman’s home for her YouTube vlog.

While browsing through the outfits, Farah asked Adhyayan, “How did you do this?” When he struggled to answer, Shekhar stepped in playfully: “Just like how Farah is a choreographer, filmmaker, and now a vlogger — just like that.” Farah laughed and folded her hands, saying, “Please forgive me!”

Adhyayan Suman launched the brand in partnership with Miss Universe India Divita Rai and his mother Alka Suman, with Shekhar Suman supporting them financially.

Farah Khan seemed genuinely impressed with the designs. Pointing to one outfit, Adhyayan told her, “We debuted at Cannes this year with this gown.” On asking who wore it, he revealed it was Anushka Sen.

The gown — titled the Amara Gown — is a deep-plum, strapless couture piece adorned with the classic Tree of Life motif. According to the brand’s website, it is priced at Rs 3,50,000.

Farah then asked jokingly, “What do you have in store for me?” After browsing through several outfits and trying on a few, she didn’t purchase anything. For dinner, however, she dressed in the Noorani Kaftan, priced at Rs 24,444 (currently discounted to Rs 21,999 on the brand’s website).

Post dinner, Farah Khan thanked the Suman family for their hospitality and added humorously, “Thank you for the mind-blowing food, and this mind-blowing dress — which I’m going to return to you because it’s very expensive.”

Other notable outfits from the brand include the Regal Brocade Set priced at Rs 16,500 and the Royal Durbar Tunic priced at Rs 10,650.
