The Election Commission (EC) has slapped a showcause notice to Trinamool Congress’s Bhangar candidate Abdur Rezzak Mollah for allegedly using derogatory language against actress-turned-BJP leader Roopa Ganguly.

Mollah was showcaused based on a complaint filed by BJP’s Asim Sarkar and Jayprakash Majumder who said the leader has not only insulted Ganguly but every woman in the state.

Mollah, formerly with the CPM, had called Ganguly, who is  the BJP’s candidate from Howrah North, “the real Draupadi” in an interview recently.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer Dibyendu Sarkar confirmed that the returning officer has issued a showcause notice to Mollah.
Ganguly, however, had refused to comment, saying that it was “below my dignity” to react to such slander.

Incidentally, Mollah had been showcaused earlier as well and even issued a censure by the EC for violating the mode code of conduct. On March 17, the poll panel had issued its first notice to Mollah for instigating party workers through his speech.

Opposition parties roundly condemned his remark against the BJP leader. Ganguly’s colleague and BJP state president Dilip Ghosh said Mollah was only “trying to retain his political identity”. “He was a communist all his life but defected to TMC when his party (CPM) was not doing well. Nothing much can be expected out of a person like him,” Ghosh said.

“The comment shows the mindset of TMC and its leaders. We have lodged a complaint with EC and we demand a strong action. Those who can’t respect women don’t deserve to be in public life,” BJP national secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said.

Congress’s candidate from Bhawanipore Deepa Dasmunsi said, “No unparliamentary words should be used against anyone, let alone a woman or an election candidate.”

The CPM questioned the “silence” of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who herself has been showcaused by the EC. “From Presidencys Atreyee2 MoonmoonSen,Roopa;physical attacks 2 verbal assaults by TmC goons and leaders continue.Mam CM, why r U silent?” CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra tweeted Wednesday.
