West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack Monday on her adversaries, including the Kolkata-based Anandabazar Patrika (ABP) group, saying they won’t be able to prevent her victory in this assembly elections and will be left “sucking on lollipops”.

Banerjee was speaking at Tufanganj Assembly constituency in her first election rally at Cooch Behar, which will vote on May 5 in the final phase of the West Bengal elections.

“They have continuously been complaining about the elections — CPM, Congress, BJP and ABP ke aami election er pore ekta lollipop aar balish debo (CPM, Congress, BJP and ABP will be left sucking on lollipops after the election). They tried so hard but couldn’t do anything to me. After the elections, they should stay at home like little children and suck on their lollipops,” she said.

This is not the first time that Mamata Banerjee has singled out and accused the ABP group — dailies Anandabazaar Patrika and The Telegraph, along with Bengali news channel ABP Ananda — of being partisan.

During a rally on April 6 in Durgapur, Mamata Banerjee had accused the media group of “conspiring” against the TMC. She had said it was the “most destructive element in Bengal” and was planning “who will be the Congress candidate from which seat”.

“They are conspiring against us because they asked me to forcefully acquire land from farmers. They wanted me to remove urban land ceiling. I cannot do that…They wanted to control the government,” she had said.

ABP managing director D D Purukayastha couldn’t be contacted for comments.

On Monday, referring to the last phase of polls, she said, “We have already reached the stage where we are forming the government. But I also want Cooch Behar to vote for me because it will make it easier for us to work here. We are forming the government. The question is, by how much of a margin.”

Banerjee also accused her political opponents, in particular the BJP, of aiding groups looking to break Bengal. “The BJP wants to break Bengal up into little pieces. They know they can’t win a single seat, so they side with those who want to break Darjeeling and Cooch Behar away from Bengal. This is how the opposition is working. I will not let that happen,” she said.
