A Congress candidate in the just-concluded Assam polls has been “traceless” for a week now after police issued at least two notices to him in connection with an FIR in which a woman has accused him of rape.
“A woman has lodged an FIR against Pranjit Choudhury accusing him of committing rape and also cheating her. We have not been able to trace him,” Police Commissioner Mukesh Agrawal said Monday.
Choudhury (39), a former Youth Congress leader, was the Congress candidate for the Kamalpur segment in Kamrup district.
The 23-year old woman had lodged her FIR against Choudhury on April 13, in which she alleged that the latter had “physically exploited her with the promise to marry after the election was over.” The police have sent the woman with proper escort to her parents’ home in Kamrup after getting her medically examined in the GMC Hospital. In Kamalpur, several women’s organizations on Saturday and Sunday held demonstrations demanding immediate arrest of the Congress leader.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has made it clear that the Congress party would not stand by Choudhury if he the charges against him were proved to be true. “The law will take its own course. If he is proven guilty, the Congress will definitely not stand by him,” chief minister Gogoi had said two days ago.
