A CRPF jawan and a poll officer were killed late Sunday after a vehicle carrying polling personnel skidded off the road and fell down a hill near Relling in Bijanbari in Darjeeling district.
Polling for the second phase of Assembly elections were conducted in North Bengal, including Darjeeling, on Sunday.
While CRPF jawan M C Pradhan and Mirik resident Bishnu Rawat were killed on the spot, three others were critically injured. The injured were brought to Darjeeling District Hospital and are undergoing treatment.
Police sources said the vehicle was carrying seven poll personnel, including two CRPF jawans, who were returning after conducting the polls. The road had become slippery after rains in the evening. “The EVM was recovered with the help of locals, firebrigade and civil defense personnel,” said a police officer.
