The University of Wollongong (UOW) Wednesday denied placing any bans on applications from Indian students, or on students from any specific Indian states or regions. This clarification comes after it was reported that amidst a surge in fraudulent applications from South Asia seeking to work and not study in the country, some Australian universities are placing restrictions on Indian students.

Recently, local media reports (The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald newspapers) stated that through an investigation, they obtained emails from the Victoria University, Edith Cowan University, the University of Wollongong, Torrens University, and agents working for Southern Cross University, which show a crackdown on applications from Indian students.

However, this claim has been denied by the University of Wollongong. “UOW does not have any restrictions on student applications from India other than the standard entry criteria we apply to all international students and the requirements of the Australian Department of Home Affairs

“In fact, rather than introducing restrictions, we have streamlined our application process for all international students, including Indian students, which will speed up turnaround times on their applications,” the varsity clarified in an official statement.

The varsity also revealed that the overall visa refusal rate of the institute over the past 12 months is low, with only a tiny amount relating to refusal based on fraud (the lowest of the possible Department of Home Affairs reporting bands). It also claims that in 2023, Indian students make up UOW’s largest international cohort. “More than 2,500 Indian students are enrolled at UOW in Australia, with business, engineering and information sciences the most popular degrees,” the varsity said.

Meanwhile, the varsity is gearing up to set up a GIFT city, Gujarat campus. At present, there are nearly 70,000 Indian students studying in Australia, mostly in higher education or vocational training.
