1. First and foremost, the children must be made aware of the difference between a speech & an essay. The outline to approach a topic in both scenarios might be the same however a speech is more conversational in tone whereas an essay is a written document.

2. Start with a simple, clear introduction. Children can explain what Republic Day factually represents– January 26th marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, which made India a republic. This is something children can think about and explain in their own words. A quotation would enhance and add to the spirit of the theme.

3. Republic Day is a reminder to go through the preamble to the constitution. Honourable mentions need to be made of famous freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, and Bhagat Singh, emphasizing their sacrifices. It’s important to celebrate not only their courage but also the values they fought for.

4. In both speech and essay, children can break down words like sovereign, socialist, democratic, and republic, discussing how these principles continue to guide the nation. The Preamble’s first and last phrases, “We, the people…adopt enact and give to ourselves this Constitution,” serve as a reminder of the people’s inherent authority, this should be explained by the students.

5. India’s strength lies in its unity amidst diversity. Children should reflect on how India is made up of diverse cultures, languages, and religions, yet remains united under the same democratic ideals. This theme can be woven into both a speech and an essay to highlight the strength found in our diversity.

6. Concluding with a call to action or vision for the future is impactful. In a speech, children can ask their peers to remember the importance of democracy and unity, reminding them that as future leaders, they play a role in shaping India’s destiny. In an essay, children can share their hopes for a better, more sustainable India, encouraging their generation to think about their role in the country’s progress.

7. An essay or speech would be incomplete without mentioning the sacrifices made during India’s freedom struggle. Children should remember and write that the day is one of feeling proud for being born in a nation, of the indomitable will of Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabh Bhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and Chandra Shekhar Azad etc sacrificed even their lives to make our motherland free from oppression and servitude

8. Unity in diversity should be highlighted in both essays and speeches. Children can touch on how India’s diverse communities coexist peacefully. The makers of the Indian Constitution demonstrated on the world stage that a diverse, multicultural, and multi-religious nation can be united under a framework of democracy, justice, equality, and liberty. At the same time, it’s also essential to acknowledge modern challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and access to quality education and healthcare, acknowledging that while India has made much progress, there is still much more to be achieved for the nation.

Both speeches and essays should remind children of their responsibility as citizens. Whether they are speaking or writing, they should encourage their peers to respect the Constitution, promote justice, and contribute to a better, more inclusive India. The words of B R Ambedkar, who led the constitution-making committee, that “Cultivation of mind should be the ultimate aim of human existence” are very significant. They signify that one’s primary goal should be to grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. The real celebration of being citizens of a republic should be to let the minds think creatively and innovate for humanity with a drive toward sustainability.
