Qatar University has topped the list of world’s 200 most international institutions, a rare entry into the group dominated by Western education powerhouses in the US and the UK, according to a list published today.

Qatar University tops list, the UK universities lead in ‘most international universities’

According to the Times Higher Education (THE), the UK does the best as a country with the maximum number of universities on the list while India is conspicuous by its absence.

Qatar became the first Middle Eastern country to top the list as a result of its high score on the “international outlook” indicator in THE World University Rankings 2015-2016, THE said.

“An institution’s global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university. The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based,” Phil Baty, THE World University Rankings editor said.

“All institutions in this list deserve to celebrate being named one of the most international universities in the world is a sign of great potential, competitiveness and dynamism,” Baty said.

Qatar knocked five-time leader Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland down to fourth place. The rest of the top 10 is filled by the University of Luxembourg (2nd), University of Hong Kong (3rd), University of Geneva (5th), University of Macau (6th), ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (7th), University of St Gallen (8th), National University of Singapore (9th) and Imperial College London (10th).

Overall 28 countries are represented in the top 200 list.

The survey also reveals London as the world’s leading city for international universities, with more top institutions than the whole of the US, Canada and France combined.

London has 15 institutions, led by Imperial College London in 10th place, followed by University College London (18th), King’s College London (20th), London School of Economics and Political Science (22nd), Queen Mary University of London (23rd) and Royal Holloway, University of London (30th). These all universities feature in the top 30 most international institutions.

“London not only has the greatest concentration of top class universities of any city in the world it is also the most diverse and welcoming,” London Mayor Boris Johnson said.

“At the cutting edge of innovation and creativity, and with its unique cultural richness, London continues to have unrivalled international appeal attracting the brightest academic and student brains on the planet,” Johnson said.

The international outlook indicator considers each institution’s proportion of international staff, proportion of international students and proportion of research papers published with at least one co-author from another country.

All institutions that feature in the top 800 of the overall THE university rankings for 2015-2016 are considered.
