FOR THE first time, Panjab University has decided to include the “none of the above” (NOTA) option in student council elections for university, colleges, departments and institutions.
Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Navdeep Goyal said the decision had been taken keeping in mind the Supreme Court judgment. Secretary, University Grants Commission, Jaspal S Sandhu had earlier addressed a letter to the Vice-Chancellor for inclusion of NOTA in student elections in all universities, colleges, departments and institutions.
Student leaders of various organisations have welcomed the decision. PUSU president Nirjog Mann said, “NOTA is a welcome option because students don’t deserve to choose a candidate or a party as a choice between bad and worse. Thus, it gives them all the more power to express their views.”
SOI state president Vicky Middhukhera said, “The new decision will become a headache for the parties which did not work on merit. We have a strong votebank which will choose us as the option. We welcome the decision taken by the DSW.”
The new decision will give the students an additional option on weather the students are really satisfied with the student organisations and will also increase voting on the campus, feels Inderpreet Parry of SOPU.
“It has given another option to the students who skip the election day due to lack of interest and liking for political parties. This option will bring forth the disinterested students in large numbers.”
