The Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections are likely to be held on September 7 and not September 9 as it was scheduled earlier. This tentative date was decided in a meeting held between the PU authorities and the Chandigarh police Tuesday.
Now, the police would be recommending the date to the Home Secretary.
“They wanted the elections to be held on September 7 and we dont have any problem with that. So, we would be sending the recommendation of the said date to the Home Secretary,” said Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Sukhchain Singh Gill.
The dates have been changed keeping in mind that Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Chandigarh on September 9. The Chandigarh administration conveyed the same to the Panjab University after which a meeting was held with the police.
After an approval from the Home Secretary , the elections will be notified eight days before the scheduled date by the university authorities. Last year, the student elections were held on August 26. There are nearly 14,000 voters on the campus for the student council elections.
Four office-bearers including president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary are elected directly by the students while five members of the executive committee are elected by members of the students’ council from amongst themselves.
PU will impose a pre-code of conduct for the student council elections under which students parties won’t be allowed to hold car rallies and paste posters at the places not allocated for the purpose.
