Private institutes opposed the test because they want a greater say in the content while minority institutions were worried whether they would be able to retain minority character or not.

In 2013, the Supreme Court said the MCI and the Dental Council of India lacked legal authority to control admissions to MBBS, BDS and post-graduate courses. But this year, the judgement was recalled and just three days before the AIPMT exam (now NEET), the Supreme Court made NEET mandatory for all aspirants of medical and dental examinations.

Therefore, AIPMT exam held on May 1 was considered NEET 1 and NEET 2 for those candidates who have not appeared in the first phase exam.

In NEET 1, six lakh candidates appeared while in NEET 2, four lakh aspirants gave examination.
