About Biotechnology

The Dept of Biotechnology at IIT Madras offers two unique five-year Dual degree programs in Biological Engineering (BTech and MTech) and Biological Sciences (BS and MS). Both these programs involve four years of coursework and a final-year research project required for the Master’s degree.

The intensive research training equips the students with the necessary skills to be employed in the biotechnology industry. The Dual degree programs also facilitate their entry into doctoral programs in prestigious institutions.

The design of the undergraduate curriculum at IIT Madras and coursework requirements in both programs is designed to be highly flexible, with various stream-specializations within each program.  In lieu of their Dual Degree specialisation, students can even enroll in inter-disciplinary dual degree (IDDD) programs such as Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Engineering, Data Sciences, Energy Systems, Robotics, etc.  Thus, the diversity of Dual Degree programs offers a large variety of choices for the student to shape their careers.

Five-year Dual Degree Programme (BTech and MTech) Biological Engineering

The Dual Degree BTech and MTech in Biological Engineering has a broad-based curriculum, which provides a solid foundation for the application of engineering principles to biological systems. The programme emphasises core courses in basic sciences, engineering, and molecular bio-sciences and stream specializations based on a basket of electives in different areas such as bioprocess engineering, biomedical engineering, and computational biology.
