The CSE department at IIT Kanpur remains the top performer in placement outcomes. In the 2022–23 placement cycle, Computer Science graduates recorded an average package of around Rs 33–35 lakh per annum, with top domestic and international offers exceeding Rs 1 crore. The momentum continued in 2023–24, with the average package rising to approximately Rs 37 lakh, while the median stood at around Rs 31 lakh.
For 2024–25, reports indicate that CSE graduates again led with median offers of around Rs 40–42 lakh, despite global moderation in tech hiring. This trend underscores IIT Kanpur’s strong interface with top-tier global recruiters like Google, Microsoft, and Apple, as well as AI-focused startups and financial analytics firms.

Across all BTech streams, the Information Technology and Software Development domain continued to dominate placements at IIT Kanpur, accounting for roughly 35–40% of total offers between 2022 and 2024. However, the institute’s placement data shows a gradual diversification into emerging sectors.
The Analytics and Finance domains have expanded significantly, particularly among students from Electrical, Mathematics, and CSE backgrounds, with firms like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and QuantBox recruiting for high-paying analyst roles.
Core engineering sectors like Automotive, Energy, and Manufacturing, maintained consistent participation from companies such as Bajaj Auto, Siemens, and Indian Oil, while newer recruiters from EV, robotics, and clean-tech startups added to the variety of opportunities.
Across the three placement cycles, IIT Kanpur saw participation from leading global recruiters such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and NVIDIA, alongside Indian technology majors like Flipkart, Ola Electric, and Zomato. The institute’s reputation in AI and computational research has also attracted strong representation from semiconductor and hardware design firms such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments.
The highest packages over the past three years have ranged between Rs 1.2 crore and Rs 1.9 crore, and Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1.1 crore (domestic). These were primarily extended to students from CSE, Electrical, and inter-disciplinary AI programmes.
Internships at IIT Kanpur serve as a critical link to full-time placements. According to the institute’s Career Development Cell, the number of companies offering internships has steadily increased, with more than 160 firms participating in the 2023–24 session. Median stipends ranged from Rs 1.2 lakh per month for CSE, Rs 70,000 for Electrical, and Rs 40,000–60,000 for Mechanical and Civil Engineering students.
Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) have also seen a significant rise, particularly from analytics, consulting, and tech sectors. In 2023–24, over 300 PPOs were extended, compared to around 230 in 2022–23, reflecting companies’ preference for assessing students during internships before full-time onboarding.
While IIT Kanpur’s BTech placement performance remains strong, a notable section of students continue to pursue higher studies or research-oriented pathways in India and abroad. Several graduates from Mechanical, Electrical, and interdisciplinary programmes proceed to top institutions such as Stanford, MIT, and ETH Zurich.
Others explore entrepreneurial ventures supported by IIT Kanpur’s Startup Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC), which has helped launch more than 100 startups over the last decade.
A small proportion of graduates also opt for public sector or civil services roles, indicating a diverse post-graduation landscape extending well beyond corporate placements.
