The Lok Sabha on Monday approved a government resolution enabling the election of two of its members to the Council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the motion, seeking the election of two Lok Sabha representatives to the governing body of IISc — India’s premier institution for advanced scientific research and education.
The resolution over IISc was carried through by a voice vote. The IISc Council serves as the institute’s apex decision-making authority, guiding its administration and long-term strategy. Its mandate includes strengthening infrastructure, enhancing research capabilities, and fostering global collaborations.
The Council’s composition reflects a broad spectrum of stakeholders, with nominees from the Central and Karnataka governments, Tata Trusts, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Association of Indian Universities, as well as members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
Recently, one of the members of the IISc council, the Tata Trust, has announced an important partnership to establish the Tata IISc Medical School on the IISc campus in Bengaluru. The collaboration aims to revolutionise healthcare education and research in India by integrating clinical practice with advancements in science and engineering.
As part of the agreement, the Tata Group will contribute Rs 500 crore to support the establishment of the medical school, which is envisioned as a centre of excellence in healthcare. The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Monday.
The Tata IISc Medical School will focus on key medical specialities, including oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, diabetes and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, integrative medicine, and public health. It will offer integrated MD-PhD and dual-degree programmes to train a new generation of physician-scientists and medical technologists equipped with interdisciplinary expertise.
