The government has approved setting up of 15 degree colleges and 592 hostels, including for girls, to increase literacy rate among women from Muslim community, Lok Sabha was told today.
In a written reply, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said of the total Model Degree Colleges (MDCs), 11 are to be set up in Uttar Pradesh and four in Bihar.
Besides, the government has proposed to upgrade four other MDCs, one each in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka and Kerala, he said while replying to a question about literacy rate among men and women of Muslim community and measures being taken up by the government to increase it.
“During the 12th plan, under the scheme of multi-sectoral development programme (MSDP), the Minority Affairs Ministry has sanctioned proposal for setting up of 15 degree colleges and 592 hostels (77 hostels completed), including girls hostels in the minority concentration areas,” Naqvi said.
As per Census 2011, the literacy rate among Muslims is 68.5 per cent, which the Minister said, is higher as compared to their literacy rate of 59.1 per cent as per Census 2001.
According to the 2011 survey, literacy rate among Muslim men is 74.7 per cent and women is 62 per cent.
Naqvi said the government has approved 2,226 hostels for girl students aged between 14 and 18 from schedule castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, those below poverty line and also from minority communities under another scheme being implemented by HRD Ministry.
