CV Raman birthday: List of scholarships, fellowships for meritorious students

To honour CV Raman, there are many government bodies that have come up with scholarships and fellowship programmes in his name. Here is a list.

For decades, the works of physicist CV Raman have inspired students and scientists. His unparalleled contribution to science is the reason why every year, as a tribute, India celebrates National Science Day on February 28.

To honour CV Raman, there are many government bodies that have come up with scholarships and fellowship programmes in his name. Here is the list:

CV Raman Fellowship for African Researchers

Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) offer the CV Raman Fellowship for African researchers. The aim is to provide an opportunity for them to conduct collaborative research in various areas of science and technology in different Indian universities and R&D institutions under the guidance of Indian scientists.

Raman–Charpak Fellowship programme

The Raman–Charpak Fellowship programme is in honour of two Nobel Laureates in Physics, Prof CV Raman and French Nobel Laureate Prof Georges Charpak. The fellowship was launched in 2013 which aims at improving the doctoral skills of Indian and French students by providing them an opportunity to carry out part of their research work in a university / research and development institute based in France or India respectively.

This programme is also open to French Master Students, who wish to spend some time in India in
accordance to their curriculum. The students can carry out internship work in a university/research institute based in India.

For Indian Fellows: Fellowship Support of 1500 Euros per month for daily expenses, local travel, accommodation charges plus Social Security charges
For French Fellows: Fellowship support Rs. 40,000 per month for daily expenses, local travel, etc, plus accommodation charges not exceeding Rs 45,000 per month

Raman Fellowship for Post Doctoral Research for Indian Scholars in the USA

Launched in 2015, this fellowship of $3000 per month is awarded by the University Grants Commission. With the fellowship amount the minimum period of the fellowship would be six months and a maximum period of fellowship would be 12 months.

The fellows are also entitled to a one-time personal contingency grant of up to a maximum of Rs 50,000 to cover their visa, airport transfer, medical insurance, etc. They are also permitted to travel within the USA to attend conferences or visit other institutes of interest with the approval of the advisor at the host institute. The Fellow will be entitled to avail one of the following grants for this purpose.

i) Grant of $600 for a fellowship period up to six months
ii) Grant of $1200 for fellowship period beyond six months

Sir CV Raman Scholarship

Launched in 2001-2002, this scholarship focused on encouraging students studying in the science stream. The scholarship is meant for talented students who are pursuing their education in basic sciences in government and private-aided degree colleges.

Every year, the meritorious student shall receive a scholarship amount of Rs 5,000. To avail the scholarship, the applicant should have passed with high marks in their PUC examination. Moreover, the candidates who have taken up BSc course in their undergraduate programme should have taken two subjects as basic science. The scholarship will be awarded to only those who should have passed the semester examination in one attempt.
