Bihar board to give students more options in long-form questions

The move comes after the state board introduced 50 per cent objective questions from 2018 onwards.

Perturbed with the dismal pass percentage in Classes X and XII board exams for the past three years, the state board has now decided to give students more options to choose from while answering long-form subjective questions. The new format will come into effect for the board exams to be held in 2019.

The move comes after the state board introduced 50 per cent objective questions from 2018 onwards. Earlier, Class XII board exams had 40 per cent multiple choice questions and Class X had no objective question.

BSEB chairperson Anand Kishore said, “With the change in examination pattern, we are not just aiming at improving pass percentage, but also an increase in marks so that our students can get admission to good institutions in and outside Bihar.”

Explaining the new format, a BSEB official said, “Students will now have to choose five out of 15 subjective questions in a paper. It means if a student has studied half the syllabus, he or she can attempt all the questions. The board has already uploaded model sets of 20 subjects of Class X and four subjects would be uploaded soon”.

Former BSEB chairperson Rajmani Prasad Singh, however, said, “The Board must not rush through any pattern. Such short-term measures can only help borderline students and might not really help meritorious students.”
