Even as students of Jawaharlal Nehru University are protesting against a hike in fees and hostel and mess charges, the Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday approved total reimbursement of college fees, hostel and mess to eligible students under a new scheme. The decision was approved by the Cabinet and it allocated Rs 3,400 crore every year for 100 percent fee reimbursement under the Jagananna Vidya Deewana scheme.
The allocation is Rs 1,800 crore more than the budget allotted by the previous Telugu Desam Party government so that the entire amount that an eligible student pays as college tuition fees in a year is reimbursed.
For hostel and mess charges, the Cabient approved a separate Rs 2,300 crore every year under Jagananna Vasathi Dewaana scheme. Under this scheme, students of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) will receive Rs 10,000 every year, polytechnic students will get Rs15,000, and Junior college students would receive Rs 20,000 per year as their mess charges. The amount would be paid in two installments – in December and July – and will be credited to the account of the student’s mother.
