Police have ordered a judicial enquiry into two videos that show DCP (North) Monika Bhardwaj being manhandled during the clash between lawyers and police at Tis Hazari court last week. One of the videos, which emerged Friday, shows the DCP leading a few police officers and pleading with lawyers, with hands folded, to stop the violence. But she is violently swept away by the crowd of lawyers that rush towards her and her team. Another video that emerged a day earlier shows her being chased away by a group of lawyers, with some officers trying to shield her.
The video that emerged on Friday also showed vehicles on fire, ostensibly set ablaze by protesting lawyers.
Reacting to the videos, Bhardwaj said, “There was a crowd control situation there. I went to the spot as a district DCP. A judicial enquiry has already been ordered and I will give my statement or version before the judiciary. We will present the facts there.”
Another video that emerged Friday shows Additional DCP (North) Harinder Singh being thrashed by lawyers. In the video, lawyers are seen assaulting police. After a group of six-seven lawyers start beating an officer with belts, Singh intervenes and tries to push them aside. A police spokesperson said, “We have received the videos and are conducting a scientific investigation to recover more facts. We are also recording statements from both parties.”
