As the ruling BJP is set to celebrate on a grand scale the unveiling of the Statue of Unity in Gujarat to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) has decided to celebrate Patel’s birth anniversary in every district of Uttar Pradesh the same day. A party functionary said that state SP leaders from backward castes and MPs and MLAs would take part in these events as chief guests and deliver speeches about the thoughts of Patel. The BJP has, meanwhile, planned ‘Run for Unity’ in all the districts to mark the unveiling of the 182-metre statue. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the statue on the bank of the Narmada river.

Sabarimala ‘Solution’

Editor of a Tamil political weekly and part-time director of Reserve Bank of India S Gurumurthy tweeted about a “solution” that he received on WhatsApp on the contentious issue of entry of women to the Sabarimala temple. It mentioned the name of rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal. The tweet said: “Somebody sent this on WhatsApp. Quote: Best solution to Shabarimala is to appoint Bishop Franco Mulakkal as Tantri. *Even ladies beyond 60 will be scared to come Shabarimala.” The tweet came after he replied to another tweet by human rights activist Madhu Purnima Kishwar. Kishwar, in her tweet, also mentioned Mulakkal and said that he “…appears more like an underworld don than a high office bearer of the church”.
