Goa Calling
The delay in announcement of the schedule for election of the Congress president had been puzzling party leaders, who were expecting Rahul Gandhi to take over by the end of October or early November. The expectation was that a meeting of the Congress Working Committee would be held immediately after polling in Himachal Pradesh to announce the schedule. The buzz in the Congress now is that Sonia Gandhi could take off for Goa in the next couple of days as the smog in Delhi worsens. Sonia, an asthma patient, was in Goa in mid-November last year also to avoid the Delhi smog. She then returned to Goa to ring in the new year with daughter Priyanka. She also spent some days in a resort in South Goa’s Mobor beach as recently as September.

Cars To Cabs
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs decided to walk the talk at the urban mobility conference in Hyderabad this week. Instead of the usual practice of having a dedicated car at the disposal of every delegate through the length of the conference, the ministry asked each of the 300 senior delegates to submit their specific travel requirements and booked the services of cab aggregators accordingly.

Family Connection
Even as the BJP leadership is quite confident about the prospects of the party in Gujarat, some see an uncanny link between the Gandhi family and the important dates for the Gujarat elections. The process will start with the issue of the gazette notification for the first phase of polling on November 14, the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru. The first polling day is December 9, the birthday of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and the second phase is December 14, the birthday of Sanjay Gandhi.

Tight Schedule
The annual conference of top police officers of the country that was scheduled for next month has been postponed due to the tight schedule of the Prime Minister and Home Minister, who are likely to be busy with the Gujarat election campaign. Officials also cited administrative issues for the postponement. Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh have participated in the three-day conference every year. It was planned in Madhya Pradesh this year.
