WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus joined an impromptu dandiya session
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus joined an impromptu dandiya session after landing in Ahmedabad on Wednesday alongside dancers who were present at the airport to welcome G20 delegates for the ministerial meeting of the health track, beginning Thursday. The AYUSH Ministry put out the video, extending a warm welcome to ‘Tulsi Bhai’ — a moniker given to him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. To this, the PM replied: “My good friend Tulsi Bhai is clearly well prepared for Navratri.” Asked about the name, Ghebreyesus said he liked it, as it refers to a medicinal plant. The name Tulsi Bhai was given to Ghebreyesus by Modi at the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit last year. Ghebreyesus is in Gandhinagar for the first global summit on traditional medicine.
With the announcement of candidates for Tripura by-elections on Tuesday, the BJP’s central leadership seemed to have sent a strong message to the party’s state unit. The party has announced candidates for Boxanagar and Dhanpur, the seat Union Minister Pratima Bhaumik had quit after winning it in the Assembly elections in March. The leadership is learnt to have picked Bhaumik’s choices for both constituencies — Taffajal Hossain for Boxanagar and Bindu Debnath for Dhanpur — ignoring the suggestions of Chief Minister Manik Saha. The move has left Saha and his close associates in an awkward position in the intensely faction-ridden state unit. Bhaumik, who was considered the party’s CM candidate, was asked to retain her Lok Sabha seat, as the BJP central leadership then decided to continue with Saha. However, the rift in the state unit between former CM Biplab Kumar Deb (Bhaumik is considered to be close to Deb) and Saha has only deepened since then.
