Son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat secretary has been accused of molesting a minor girl on Holi. The incident happened on Wednesday at Gargram under Chandipur police station in East Midnapore.

The 16-year-old Class X student was studying at her home, and taking the advantage of her being alone,Biman Maiti, son of a panchayat secretary, and his cousin Lalu Maiti reached the girl’s home on the pretext of playing Holi.

Realising the potential danger, she declined and locked the door, but the duo broke the lock and forcibly entered the house, applying colour on her and allegedly molesting her.

When she raised an alarm, her mother and brother who were in the vicinity rushed back to find the two still in the house with the victim. “Before they left, they gave a warning that if we talked to anyone about it,they will kill us,” said the victim’s mother.

She also alleged that when in the evening they went to submit a complaint at Chandipur PS,they declined to take it because of the accused’s father’s political link.

Later when the victims’ neighbours went to the police station in a large number, the police accepted the complaint. “Even as they took the complaint late into the night, they did nothing to arrest the offenders. And since then,we have been getting threat calls, asking us to withdraw the complaint,” the victim said.

Protesting against the police apathy, the locals put up a blockade on Gargram Road for about two hours on Thursday. It was lifted after senior police officers intervened and assured all help.

Police admitted that there had been a complaint of molestation but brushed aside the allegations of inaction. “We started a case as soon as we got the complaint and conducted raids. The accused have been absconding since then and we hope to nab them soon. If they put in a complaint about who has been threatening them we will start a separate case for that as well. The girl had been sent for a medical test and the report is yet to come,” said a senior police official.
