UPA Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee met Left and Congress leaders in the Assembly here today and urged them to vote for him.
Mukherjee arrived at the Assembly at 10 am and held his first meeting with MLAs of the Left parties. The legislators of the CPM,Forward Bloc,DSP and Samajwadi Party pledged support to him.
I am happy that you have decided to vote for me. Had all the members of the Left Front (including CPI and RSP) come forward,I would have been happier. However,I thank you all, Mukherjee told the Left MLAs.
The Marxists said they were honoured that Mukherjee had sought their support. Even if you had not come,we would have voted for you, leader of opposition Suryakanta Mishra said.
During his one-hour-45-minute meeting with Congress MLAs and MPs,Mukherjee became nostalgic, saying his political career had come full circle. On July 4,1969,I was first elected to the Rajya Sabha and it was in the room where I had the meeting today that I took the certificate from the Returning officer. And it is another July when I am calling it a day on my political career, he said.
Adhir Choudhury,MP from Behrampore, slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not supporting Mukherjee. Pranabda is the architect of the alliance. We sacrificed a lot because of advice from him to keep quiet. We have become a laughing stock in the eyes of politicians of other states. Its a shame, Choudhury said.
MP Deepa Dasmunsi said she would carry on the struggle against the Trinamool Congress. She added that the state Congress was willing to go it alone in the panchayat elections slated next year.
There were emotional scenes during the meeting. Choudhury cried while delivering his speech. MLAs like Asit Mitra and Asit Mal requested Mukherjee to invite them for the oath-taking ceremony.
