Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may have declared a war against introducing set-top boxes in the state but she is not exactly taking any chances against a possible television blackout from Thursday.

A day after she urged the people of the state not to go in for set-top boxes,it has emerged that Mamata has herself ordered for set-top boxes for the 85 television sets at the Writers’ Building where she spends most of the day. This will ensure that the chief minister and her ministerial colleagues as well as top officials get to see television without any disruption.

While set-top boxes have already been installed for the television sets in the chief minister’s chamber as well as those in the CMO,the executive engineer of the PWD in charge of cable TV has been ordered to tell the operator for Writers’ Building to convert all the television sets in the state secretariat into digital ones.

The chief minister mostly watches news but in the evenings she sometimes watches popular Bengali serials. “The chief minister cannot be denied flow of information because of the new system and so we did not take any risk,” an official told The Indian Express.

An official of the department of information and culture also said that the state government has not paid the dues to the cable operator in the last 15 years and the operator has even threatened to snap the connection.

“The file with the bill has been sent to the chief minister for her clearance,” the official said.
