Uttarakhand: Independents claim most seats as local body election results pour in

Leaders of the BJP and the Congress refrained from commenting on the election results stating that the final results were are to be declared. A total of 69.79 per cent turnout was recorded in the urban local body polls on Sunday.

Independent candidates seem to be moving ahead in the results of the local body elections declared by the state election commission Tuesday. According to the data released by the commission, of the 1,064 wards in the 84 ULBs, results for 749 seats were declared by 8:30 pm, in which 427 seats were won by Independent candidates, 197 were won by the BJP, 121 by the Congress and the remaining four by other political parties.

The complete results of the urban local body elections held in 84 of the 92 urban local bodies (ULB) across Uttarakhand will be declared on Wednesday. On the 63 seats for Mayor/Chairman results for which were declared by 8:30 pm, the BJP won 26, followed by Independent candidates who won 20 seats, and the Congress claimed victory on 17.
