Sub-inspector held for molesting woman

Police on Thursday lodged an FIR against sub-inspector Kamta Prasad Awashthi who allegedly molested a woman at his residence under Mal police station area on Wednesday evening.

Police on Thursday lodged an FIR against sub-inspector (S-I) Kamta Prasad Awashthi who allegedly molested a woman at his residence under Mal police station area on Wednesday evening. Awashthi was suspended and arrested on Thursday evening.

The woman,a resident of Mal,in his complaint to the police said she had gone to meet Awashthi at the police station as he was probing a complaint lodged against her and her husband.

The complaint was filed by her neighbour whose one leg was fractured after a fight with the victim’s husband nine months ago. Although the neighbour was compensated by the victim and her husband,she again lodged a complaint with the police after some complication developed in her leg recently,the woman told the police.

The woman alleged that Awashthi had assured her of getting the matter resolved if she met him alone. When she reached the police station on Wednesday evening,Awashthi took her to his residence where he molested her,she alleged,adding she escaped after biting the S-I’s hand.

The police have lodged an FIR against Awashthi at Mal police station under various sections of the IPC,including 356 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 342 (wrongful confinement) and SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Meanwhile,Lucknow IG Ashutosh Pandey suspended Mal Station Officer Rakesh Kumar Singh for delay in informing higher officers about the incident. Malihabad Circle Officer Jitendra Kumar Srivastava,too,was transferred to Ghaziabad Local Intelligence Unit in the evening.

Additional SP (Protocol) G P Chaturvedi has been handed over the investigation in the matter,Lucknow Police PRO P K Srivastava said,adding that Awashthi had been arrested and was being interrogated.

Woman alleges rape by Apna Dal leader,2 aides

A woman has accused an Apna Dal leader,Ajaz Ahmad,and two of his two associates of raping her at Shiv Kuti area of the city. The police have registered a case in this connection. No arrests have been made so far.

According to the police,the incident came to light when the woman informed the police control room (PCR) on July 7 morning that she was gangraped by three men in a house in Mehndauri locality of Shiv Kuti. The police then contacted the victim.

Initially,a case of outraging modesty was registered. Station Officer (Shiv Kuti),V K Singh,said: “The woman was sent for medical examination on the same day. The report established that she was raped. Subsequently,her statement was recorded on July 10 and the IPC section of rape was added on July 11. Efforts are on to arrest the accused.”

In her complaint,the woman,a resident of Mandhata area in Pratapgarh,had alleged that on July 6 she was brought to the house in Mehndauri on the promise of a job by Ahmad,whom she knew.

Two more persons — later identified as Sainik and Pappu — were already present there. They then took turns raping her that night,she alleged. Singh said Ajaz,who otherwise runs a brick kiln in Pratapgarh,had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls from Biswanathganj constituency.
