Mohammad Ali Jauhar Research Centre will focus on matters related to welfare of Muslims

After giving its nod to Jauhar University in Rampur, the Akhilesh Yadav government is now all set to turn another dream project of Azam Khan,Minister of Urban Development,Minority Welfare and Waqf, into reality — a research institute, which will focus on matters related to welfare of Muslims.

The institute,Mohammad Ali Jauhar Research Centre, will be located in Rampur. However, unlike the Jauhar University, which is a private varsity, the institute will be under the Minority Welfare Department. It will have a director and 21 other staff.

The objective of setting up this research centre is to develop it as a resource centre for all minority related data and undertake studies. Surveys and research work to provide the back-up information for planning any scheme which is aimed at minority welfare will also be undertaken by the institute. Besides,it will offer academic support to research scholars, institutions, government and other organisations for their research on minority welfare issues and schemes. The institute will also frame the format of any scheme related to minority welfare at the request of the government.

The Minority Welfare Department has sought Rs 211 lakh from the state government to complete the project, which was conceived by Khan during the previous SP regime, headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav. It was also allocated Rs 983 lakh in 2004-05,of which Rs 771 lakh was utilised. Between 2007-12 — during BSP regime — work came to a standstill.

“Since it has the name Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar,it was neglected by the BSP regime. It is a government institute and my interest is only that it is coming up in Rampur,” Khan said. He stated that the institute is still in the back of his mind as he is currently occupied with the Jauhar University. “But the institute is almost complete and has a magnificent building. Some work is left which will be done. I am not aware about the minute details,” he added.

The institute is spread over an area of five acres. It has an auditorium with 250 seats,in which only finishing work remains. The administrative block is complete, while a hostel with 400 rooms is also complete. Some internal roads are to be laid while three houses of type III are complete. Other accomodation, including three houses of type IV,four more houses of type III,12 houses of type II and 11 houses of type I are to be constructed.
