Kerala BJP president K Surendran was booked on Tuesday night for allegedly making derogatory remarks against women CPI(M) leaders.
The Thiruvananthapuram city police registered the case against Surendran under sections 354 A (iv) (making sexually coloured comments against women) and 509 (insulting modesty of women by gesture or words) of the Indian Penal Code following a complaint by CPI(M) leader C S Sujatha.
Addressing a function in Thrissur on Sunday, Surendran had purportedly said that women leaders in CPI(M), which leads the LDF government in the state, have become fat after looting the people. He had also purportedly called the women leaders of CPI(M) “Putana”, a demoness in Hindu mythology who was killed by the infant God Krishna. He claimed that these leaders are “insulting women of Kerala”.
On Tuesday, leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, V D Satheesan of the Congress, said that Surendran should tender an apology, as his remarks were highly condemnable and an insult to women.
Before Sujatha’s complaint, Youth Congress leader Veena S Nair had lodged a police complaint and sought legal action against Surendran for his reported comments. In her complaint, Veena said Surendran’s comments comparing women leaders to Putana were an insult to women and a case should be registered against him.
Satheesan said no political leader should compare women with Putana. “It is insulting and repulsive,” the Congress leader said. “Why has no CPI(M) leader in Kerala reacted to such a repulsive statement from a BJP leader? Both Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan are silent… It shows the CPI(M)’s soft approach towards BJP,” he alleged.
After the Congress questioned the CPI(M)’s silence over the controversy, several party leaders came out deploring Surendran’s statements. State Industries Minister and CPI(M) leader P Rajeeve said the BJP leader’s remarks against women reflect his attitude towards women. Kerala should debate such an abominable statement, which has insulted women, he said.
