Gujarat: Ukai dam receives 1 lakh cusecs of rainwater after heavy rainfall in neighbouring states

Sources said that there are 51 gauge stations in the upper catchment areas, and 35 stations among them recorded about 340 mm of rainfall on Friday.

The Ukai dam in Gujarat’s Tapi district received over 1 lakh cusecs of water recently following heavy downpours in neighbouring Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. After the inflow, the water level in the dam has gone up to 312.34 feet.

Till Friday afternoon, the inflow of water from the upper catchment area of Tapti River was 21,004 cusecs. The inflow increased to 41,310 cusecs Friday evening and 1,02,523 cusecs during the night following heavy rainfall in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

Sources said that there are 51 gauge stations in the upper catchment areas, and 35 stations among them recorded about 340 mm of rainfall Friday. On Saturday, eight gates of Hatnur dam in Madhya Pradesh were opened up to 1.5 metre to discharge 24,297 cusecs of rainwater, while six gates of Prakasha dam in Maharashtra were fully opened to release 79,847 cusecs of rainwater from Friday evening to Saturday afternoon.

Ukai Dam Executive Engineer P G Vasava said, “We are regularly receiving an inflow of over 1.02 lakh cusecs of water but there is nothing to worry. At present, the water level in the dam is 312.34 feet against the rule level (expected water capacity) of 333 feet. Last year on June 15, the water level in the dam was 326 feet…”

As per details received from the flood control department, Surat, Navsari, Dangs, Valsad and Tapi districts received moderate rainfall recently. The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall in south Gujarat in the next 24 hours.
