As many as 19 members and leaders of the Surat Diamond Workers’ Union were detained while they were planning to take out a rally at Katargam on Sunday.
The union had announced to take out a rally on Gandhi Jayanti day from Katargam to Hirabaug in Varachha, raising various demands. Union state president Ramesh Jileria, Surat unit president Bhavesh Tank and INTUK president Naishad Desai were present at Katargam along with several diamond polishers.
However, before they could take out the rally, police detained 19 people, including union leaders and diamond polishers, and took them to Katargam police station. They were released in the evening.
Talking to The Indian Express, Bhavesh Tank said, “We were raising 14 demands, including covering diamond workers under labour laws and abolishing professional taxes on diamond polishers… We had announced that the rally will be peaceful but we were not allowed to take out the rally.”
Katargam police inspector Y B Gohil said, “We detained 19 people, including organisers of the rally. They applied for police permission but we denied it, considering the law and order situation. Even after denying permission, they tried to take out the rally and were detained.”
