Gujarat Safai Kamdar Adhikar Andolan has threatened to organise strike in all municipal corporations and municipalities of the state if the state government fails within three months to implement the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, passed by the Centre, and the Supreme Court order of March 27, 2014, directing the state government to identify the “safai karamcharis” who died while working in the manholes since 1993 and award a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to their dependents.
Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, Andolan’s representatives Kirit Rathod, Jitendra Rathod and Vasudev Charupa said that 40 sanitation workers had died while working in manholes in Ahmedabad alone since 1993, but the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation paid a compensation ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000 only to the family members of some deceased workers.
